Drunk on Knitting

Knitting is my latest obsession!
Well I have knitted in the past, but this time around its different.
This time we are serious, and are looking for long time commitment.
And you have to appreciate the portability of the craft, I can carry it everywhere with me, and continue working on my project.
Also it doesn't hurt that I am taking knitting classes from a lovely lady, who has sort of changed my perspective on knitting.
Here are some of the yummy colors I got last week. This is Cascade 220 wool.

The colors are so pretty, unlike the weather outside. I am not sure what I plan to do with these.

Here's a "Fear of commitment" cowl that I made for a dear friend. The pattern for this cowl is free, and you can find it here.

Here is a scarf I am making for Enn. He chose this yarn for himself. And the pattern on the scarf is basket weave pattern. I could not click a picture of the pattern, perhaps in a better light.

After knitting nearly 6' of it, he tells me its slightly itchy!

And unbelievable but true , I am so courageous that I am knitting socks for myself!!! Well I would not comment unless I finish it. But here is the proof of the beginnings.

Since I have been a lazy lazy blogger....I made this one ages ago and realized I never updated it here.
Thankfully I have a pic at each stage.
This is one of those things that you use to put hot pots on to save the surface...(what do u call it??? )

I was very determined to go slow, have patience to break 1000 small pieces and actually have a plan.

After I was done cutting and gluing down all the pieces.

And the grouting...

Grouting brings in world of difference. Its not very evident from the picture but trust me it does.

Story of a girl who could not draw loosely

I found this about my self when I was taking the basic drawing class. And we were exploring gesture drawings. That I could not draw loosely.

This was my object

This is what I interpreted of it...

And then began my journey...

I absolutely failed to comprehend what "loose" or "expressive" is

I tried drawing with left hand :FAIL:

I tried procrastination :DID NOT HELP: (never does)

I tried pretending to be messy :FAIL:

I tried with closed eyes :COULD NOT SEE MUCH:

And then LIKE THAT I was "genuinely" loose

I thought may be I got lucky, I should try again to test it :IT WORKED:

I could not contain my excitement , I could not believe I can actually draw like this...

I was unstoppable

And following two were my submission in the finals

And I got good grades :)

My project "Thing a day" tanked terribly!!
I could not keep up with the tons of commitment I thought I could handle! But seriously I was doing a lot of stuff during the whole month. I am taking a mosaic class, a sewing class and continuing with pottery... all this with some travelling, attending parties / events along with some serious addiction of Desperate Housewives ....ok I will stop now. (just trying to explain my seriousness)

Some pottery stuff I worked on lately...
Here's a baking dish, I luv these, they also fit in my toaster oven. And my fav. part of making them is decorating the handle!

I have been experimenting with hand building, the results I'd say, not very pleasing. It takes more work than throwing on a wheel, but one thing I can achieve with hand building, six identical bowls which stack.!!!

If the shape seems familiar, its because I used one of those regular styrofoam bowl as a mold. And the white stuff is talcum powder to prevent clay to stick to styrofoam bowl.

This is one of those thing, you put stuff and hang on wall...ok I am sounding weired now.

This looks like a guy with googly eyes smiling :)

And all the lil swoopli things I made on the pieces is courtesy this awesome clay gun. It makes intricate details a breeze.

Wine bottle recycled lamp

Boy this new year surely looks bright at my end. With these awesome grey days around me, this actually seems like a good idea.
A couple of disclaimer : ....
I am NOT SURE about the fire safety of this lamp. But the bulb holder I am using is for the tiny tiny night bulb.
Also what I have made here is not amazingly bright....

Old lamp revamp in new year

Hope everybody is having a fabulous new year, I know mine was awesome since I spent a week long vacation in New Orleans. My gosh..!! what a place...so rich in culture...food...art...life.... I absolutely luved it.
Here are a couple of lucky clicks.

I Recently discovered Spray Adhesive. I had briefly worked with it in my art class but this time around was intense. One thing I would like to mention here, when they say use the spray adhesive in a well ventilated area, THEY MEAN IT!!! I slacked, and well outside there was snow, so I just stayed indoor, and used it carelessly, I swear it knocked me out... I learned my lesson and for the rest of the projects, I was actually outside in the snow spraying stuff and trying not to inhale.

I got a couple of these lamp shades at a flea market last summer. They were brand new in a package with a $10 price tag and everything, and I got it for 2 bucks :)

I took my fav. fabric (yup the same I sewed my skirt with...) roughly cut it to fit, and glued it on using the spray adhesive.

Took care of the edges using hot glue.

Finally took a black satin ribbon and hot glued it on the lower rim of the lamp shade. The final picture does nor do justice to its prettiness...(no really!) . I will try and click another one.

Before I could blog about the fact that how wonderful my Kindle is ....(I don't know why I have a critical battery picture, but u get the drift!)

Today I discovered a tiny crack in it :(

I was terribly sad and upset. I mean its been less than 2 months since I have had it, and have been keeping it very very carefully. It was a birthday gift from Enn, and that made me extra sad.
He got it from Staples, so I was not sure if I was suppose to contact Staples or Amazon to complain about it.
I was prepared to beg-request-argue for a replacement ...so I went ahead and called Amazon, and they said they will replace it. ..... Like that..!!!!!!
I am absolutely amazed and impressed with their service. Hopefully soon enough I will get my new Kindle and all I have to do is put the older in the same box the new one cam in and ship it off. Amazon will also pay for the shipment.

So that was my happy ending story, also at Gloria's blog I read this lovely story of this little dogie that made me feel warm and fuzzy.

Today was my final submission for the Drawing class.
The semester is done. I cannot believe its over.
I had a great time and I got to learn so much. If anything, I am definitely more patient than what I started with.
Also I finally know how to draw gesture drawings. Going so loose and crazy definitely put me in pain, but finally I figured it out. Which is a BIG Achievement.
We were required to have a object of personal importance and through out the semester we had to develop a portfolio drawing this object using different techniques.
My object was this mug ,I made in my Pottery class.

I will post later my various takes on this mug. (Pinkie promise :)

So I have been looking at my blog header and have been wondering, "WHAT WAS I THINKING..??"
I mean some of the words don't really make sense any more.

"Trying to hold some log of my whims, creative fits, itches, pleasures, pains, love, family, blessings, shopping, sale, regrets, life"

Probably it seemed like a good idea back than. Oh well...! I guess a change is in order.

So at least for now I will edit it to "Trying to hold some log of my whims."

I am many things and one of it is surely whimsical. I mean look at me, one day I want to be a seamstress, next day a potter, attempts to paint never stop, some days I am a hard core environmentalist, and then I don't blog for 6 months. (Book maker, cook,baker, home maker, quilting etc. etc. ....I will not even go there...)

Today for the first time ever...I carved pumpkins....
I carved a couple of them. It was the part of today's art class. I had so much fun.

A few days back this tablish like structure came as a part of packaging of my printers toner. It really looks like a tiny table, all I did was hot glued the sides and taped it to insure its durability.
Glued some pretty paper.

And here is the final result.

It sits happily and perfectly in front of the window sill and contains some essentials.

The more color the better..!!!!

After seeing this very fabulous tutorial at Craftynest I had to give it a try. We happen to have an abundance of wine corks, and so far I had been only using them for decor purposes. Like in a vase or something. BUt this made total sense. Cutting a cork it in half, was not very easy, and of course I could not cut them all in equal length. Also this was my first time with a hot glue gun, and I had so much fun using it.,it gets addicting.

This is how it looks on the other side. I absolutely luuv the color variations in these.

The Incredible Drama

The weekend was very very stressful.
Our beloved cell phone HTC Incredible...no let me rephrase, my husband's beloved cell phone HTC Incredible got a wash in washer...!! (Mine is safe with me)
You see, I had a HEAP of laundry, the HEAP has been accumulating since more than three weeks (that's right, I have a more than three weeks supply of you-know-what!) and I was kind of over whelmed. So I was picking clothes left-right and center and just dumping them in washer, and I am not the one who separates whites, delicates, work clothes or Check Pockets..!!!
The drama started when Enn asked me abut his so n so pair of shorts which had cell-phone in the pocket.And I immediately recalled stuffing them in the washer what followed was me screaming, crying, apologizing, poor Enn did not really got a chance to express his emotions.
Google came in handy, and apparently there are a lot of people out there who wash their phones. So this is what I learned/ we did:

When phone gets a water wash, DO NOT SWITCH IT ON & Immediately removed the battery,Sim , memory card.
A good tool to completely open phone is that tiny screw driver used to tight eye-glasses.Only open parts that you can put back together(You don't want to solve a circuit jigsaw puzzle.

Since we had completely opened it, we kept it under a lamp for around 12-15 hours. Its also suggested to put it in a bag of rice, but we were afraid that it might get inside the phone.
After 12-15 of hrs lamp treatment, I wrapped it in kitchen towel and put it in a bag of rice for another 12-15 hrs.

After all this moisture sucking treatments, the screen looked clear,and we were ready to turn it on. I was shaking and nervous. But Enn assembled it and turned on the power button, and the baby said in a lovely-robotic-mechanical voice "Droid..."...OoOohhh it was soooo exciting. I felt a rush a relief.

So far the phone is working alright, but I will not be too excited about it. I am sure there will be some impact on its performance, let's see.
Did I mention the most important lesson - to check pockets before u wash clothes.

Contour drawing

Couple of weeks back the assignment was in Contour Drawing, There was literally a flee market in the middle of the class and we were suppose to pick 10 objects and draw them. They had to be very very simple line drawings and all the objects had to be transparent. We had to use various pencils/pens.

The critique I got was there was no variation in my line, in the sense within a single object the shade and thickness of the line remained same. I guess I will try to improve that.

This was the complete picture, Remembers my comfort with little drawing surfaces, forget about it....now I only work in a 18x24 inches big sketch book....:) and it feels damn good. My teacher said a wonderful thing..."while drawing use your whole body not just your hands."

Lol, you cannot go any further past...these people come from way back in time. We are studying gesture drawing. My teacher told me "don't be afraid of going outside the line...and loose." I really really had trouble doing this, I mean I was literally in physical pain in going outside the line. Not that I am a perfectionist, but my resistance to go out my comfort zone amazed me. I am going there....it will take time...:) until than I m on the line...

Living my dreame

Yupp that's what I am doing...
For as long as I can remember... I wanted to take a drawing class. A proper art school drawing class...and I am finally getting to do it.
Its crazy ...amazing ...and fantastic.
I say crazy b'coz...I work full time ...then this class...and then I have loads and loads of home work to do....not to mention house/cleaning/cooking/laundry etc.
I luv rushing to the class after so many years of education I had forgotten that feeling. I also like having homework tension, and trying to delay it till last moment and then pulling an almost all niter just to finish my work, and for a change the work I am doing...I am absolutely loving it. I sit in the studio/class room (which by the way is open till mid night...) for hours and hours and just don;t realize it. Time just flies. This is indeed a dream come true for me. My art teacher is fabulous,and the students in the class are really enthusiastic.
I really look forward to this journey and hope to enjoy it to the fullest.

I am generally not the crying type. In fact I go to great lengths to avoid tears, umm let me put it this way, I am not courageous enough to share my tears.
But these short films from StoryCorps made me cry like a baby, specially the "Danny and Annie"
story.
And then I went ahead on the StoryCorp Website to listen to more stories, and they all are beautiful.
All it take is a heart felt conversation.

Reusing fancy plastic water bottles

This is boring. No, nothing against the dish washing liquid, but the bottle is boring.

I tried filling dish washing liquid in fancy glass bottles but it wasn't very practical. Hands are slippery during washing dishes and you cannot squeeze it.

And then I made this awesome discovery, that the cap of any regular dish washing liquid bottle fits a regular plastic water bottle. There are ample of fancy plastic water bottles one comes across, how about extending the life of these which is anyway headed towards recycling.

Here's Fiji water bottle.I snipped off the name part filled it with dish washing liquid and replaced the cap.

I don't know what brand but some pretty water bottle, did the same thing. When I get bored all I have to do is change the bottle.

And here's a close up of the caps, and how easily the just fit.

I am sure this is just a temporary thing and does not have a long life, but might just add a little oomph to the rather boring process. Having said, that I luuv washing dishes. (i keep saying that and hope someday it will come true.)

Materialistic Me

My dreams of being a seamstress have come to a screeching halt...and I guess cheap sewing machine just don't work. Pixie has failed me as well. It just refused to pick bobbin thread, I tried every solution I could find on the web. Apparently a lot of people like me had problems with this sewing machine. I found that on singer's website. So- for the time being- its over.

I returned it, and got myself other goodies.

U see the pretty pretty flowery journal, set of gel pens and tic-tic pencils (i don't know what its called ?)

The journal is really pretty and thick
The pencils are super cute and I luuuv using 0.7mm pencils. The sound they make on paper makes my heart and hand sing. Though these have these annoying foamy grip, which I will get rid of.
And the set of pens is fabulous...!!!!! they are 52 of them!! in a tin case...glittery...colored...neon...all of them...so much inspiration for my penmanship...
I tested all these pens - and what better way than writing a nice wod with each of 'em.
The verdict : all 52 work
And finally some apple green aewsome -ness...

No points for guessing I am a petite female and have to fold my jeans if I don't get a chance to alter it.

Please excuse the tiled mirror shot, as you can see its a self shot, had somebody been around there were chances of a better click. But I was in too eager to wait :)
Its a wrap around skirt, and this is how it actually looks/works..

I already had a skirt like this, all I did traced its pattern on the fabric and cut it. And since its a wraparound there's no need for elastic, buttons or zip. Perfect beginners project and lead to instant gratification.

Here is a closer look of the fabric. Its beautiful. Its like all my favorite colors in one. I bought it back in India, actually it was my best friend RGM who bought it first. The minute I saw it on her... I was like -I want it...NOW. So she took me to the store until then I was not at peace.

Cutie Out , Pixie In

The very cute sewing machine I got me...well it did not work out. I don't know weather it was the machine or my zero sewing knowledge. I tired very patiently and did some stitching too...(which I will upload..someday)...but eventually it drove me crazy. Finally yesterday I returned it and was about to give up on stitching then I saw this pretty baby. Again it was on a "tempting sale" and I thought I will try my hand again.

And so far sewing has been kind of pleasure .... I say "kind of" because its too early to judge plus I have a lot to learn. Currently I am sewing a wraparound skirt which will be an ideal summer wear.
For some reason lately I am not able to paint. I have been wanting to but I am not able to bring myself to do it. And I have a lot of time in my hand, I am not keeping super busy. Oh well..!
The summers are beautiful here. Warm, sunny, with a mild breeze once in a while...with particularly beauutiful evenings. A Summer evening is my favorite thing. It somehow fills me with hope and energy. And lately I am passing a lot of time walking/hiking during evenings,just trying to make the most while it lasts.

See what I found....at a great deal!!!! Its very teeny tiny...but does its job. Well its a lil early to comment on its performance but I have great expectations. After a couple of years of marriage one thing I really needed was someway to alter my clothes.I m sooo excited. It only stitches in straight line...but I have a couple of Stitching projects planned let's see how far do I go.

Some bisque ware

I don't blog for months and then there is a post overdose :-)
These are some of the bisque ware recently out of the kiln.
One is a casserole similar to the one I showed in my earlier post and then there's this tall square box/canister- its hand built. And the third one is actually a jar with lid and I intend to make it a candle holder. I m very curious to find out how a candle would look inside it when placed in a dark room.
I will be glazing these and will anxiously wait for the final results...

Random updates

I guess to put it mildly its been a while that I blogged.
While I was'nt blogging I was busy with multiple things. I made a trip to Atlanta for a professional training and it was kind of a big deal...when I say big deal I mean its was the FIRST time I was away from home all on my own. Yuppie there I said it...never before have o been on my own. I have been traveling alone since a very early age but always ended up living in a home...weather mine or some body I know. Never lived alone even for a short while. And hence going alone ...living at a hotel all by myself ...all this for 5 days was quite an achievement in my books.
After the training I have been very busy with the office work. Shortly after that Enn went for a 5 day vacation without me :( .. with his boy gang. He asked me before going and I said feel free go ahead have fun....but when he went away it was kind of lonely. But my very good friend P kept me good company. In fact I stayed at her place most of the days.
Then we were visited by my brother in law for week and we had a lot of fun together. We did a bit of traveling around. Well the traveling part deserves a post of its own...and I don't trust myself weather I will post it or not. So in interest of blogging I will go ahead and upload some of my pottery stuff that I made recently.

I am really glad how the casserole turned out. In fact with the casserole I had a proud moment...when I first saw it, I thought that my instructor made it....only later to realize that it was made by me....after the glaze firing I really did not recognize it. ohhh I look fwd to baking food in it and flaunt it :)

Also I got myself a new toy...its the Droid Incredible ,finally I said good bye to my crappy phone and got this fancy thingi. Some pencil drawings

A few days back I got myself this awesome leather journal (in a great deal!) And in it I decided, I will be practicing pencil drawings. I love colors and the excitement of the process of coloring often distracts me and I don't do drawing patiently. So this is kind of a patience lesson for me. To me all these are screaming "Color me...!!!" but the wise me says -" Wait for some time, practice some more and continue to practice, everything will be eventually colorful. "

Of course this is not what this illustration really says.I was just playing around in paint brush, and did this.
In my defense, Enn was an equal participant in finishing this box of yummy truffles.

Awesome commercials

Aww I am in awe these uber cute commercials.
Both these TV commercials are for Amazon Kindle...and whenever these come , I literally stop what I am doing, and stand in front of the TV and sing and dance like a little girl.
I absolutely love the songs featured in both of them.

Flower punch - five uses

I only own one punch,~ The Flower punch~
And every now and then I try to find different ways to use it.
I think the charm of a five petal flower is absolutely splendid. Its also very special to me because all my life I have doodled two things, one is hearts and another is five petal flower.
And with no further delay I shall present the uses:

1. Branch of Paper Cherry Blossom.
This was the original post that was my inspiration, and triggered the purchase of the floral punch -How to Make a Branch of Paper Cherry Blossoms
Of course these flowers look nothing like cherry blossom, but still the idea of pink flowers on a branch is pretty.
2. In mix media art.
There can be countless ways to use these flowers in mix media art world. Following is just one of my interpretations.
This tree I made out of junk mail. (I also posted this in the past as a thing a day project in Feb)
Preparing an abstract background, and pasting these floral cut outs to form any shape. Like this tree, there can be a coffee mug, or a heart or .... the possibilities are numerous.

3. Little birds.
These birds are versatile, and can say anything (what ever you want them too). These can be on a birthday card, note book cover, letter.
With the flower punch they arepretty easy to make.

Carefully make snips in the line of the petal.With a drop of glue paste them on desired surface.
Give them eyes, feet, some personality.
Give them words...lil birdies have the power to say things that you cannot say.

4. Floral garland.
These garlands can fill life where ever they are placed.

5. Seal the envelop.

Take a little snip of clear tape, roll it like a pipe so that its sticky at both ends. Stick one end on the flower and another to seal the envelop.

I made a lot of pieces in my clay studio class, but did not get a chance to upload them here.
There are from my initial classes, and hence wobbly and asymmetrical. Alot of these are are hand-built, because I wasn't confident enough to throw on wheel.

Thing a day 28

I cannot believe this is the last day of the month and brings "Thing a day" to an end.

Congratulations to all the participants!!

It was a fabulous experience. What I really liked about it was, for a change I was not complaining to my self, that "there's not enough time for art/creativity".

I just tried to make something every day, and it was very satisfying. There were days I missed there were days I covered up for...and I am glad I could reach the end of it.

My thing for today was after months and months of procrastination today I finally took out the recycling. It was a big deal...(really..!!)

And then with whatever limited time I had I made this drawing of mermaid, holding the frog. Clearly she plans to kiss him...!!!

I will color it..someday...sometime...
